Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand, one of the 29 states of India. Dehradun was established in 1817. Dehradun is also called as Doon Valley due its location in the foothills of Himalayas. A historian named John Forest discovered a rock edict of the legendary Mauryan king Ashoka at Kalsi, about 56 kilometres away from Dehradun in 1860. Guru Ram Rai, who was the elder son of the seventh Sikh guru, Guru Har Rai, founded the town of Dehradun. The name Dehradun refers to his ‘dera’ or settlement in the valley.
