Gangotri Dham is situated at an elevation of 3100 meters above sea level in Chamoli District of Uttarakhand. The Alaknanda River originates from here which later on after confluence with Bhagirathi in Devprayag known as Ganga River. Every year many in a number of travellers come here to visit this pious place and get the blessings of Maa Ganga. The origin of the holy river Ganga is from Gomukh Glacier which is just a few km away from Gangotri Dham.
The Temple is one of the four temples of Chardham Yatra of Uttarakhand and posses its own importance for the devotees. Gangotri Town has a population of around 606 people wherein 60% Males and 40% Females are there.
It is believed that the temple was built by Nepalese General Amar Thapa.
